For the first time in years, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board will not be issuing layoff notices for the upcoming school year.
Notices are usually issued this time of year and Superintendent of Human Resources, Colleen Norris, says not having to authorize layoff notices is a great feeling.
"Historically, for a great number of years, we have had to issue layoff notices where we've been in a position where we've just had more teachers than we've had positions to offer them," she says. "So we've hit that point this year, where we did not have to issue those layoff notices to our least senior teachers."
Norris says it's a good news story for the board.
"It was a great feeling from HR that we didn't have to authorize the issuing of those notices because the sad thing over the last number of years, it's those same less senior teachers that were constantly getting those layoff notices," she says. "The reality was we had to make room for those more senior teachers because we had limited positions."
Norris adds that at this point, they expect to hire some teachers this summer or later this fall.
In June of 2019, the school board issued 16 layoff notices but those notices were rescinded in September.
