A public meeting is going to be held in Amherstburg to look at expanding the ATV trail network across Essex County.
The Essex County ATV Club currently has the use of two pieces of private land to ride on in Essex County but is seeking permission for access to designated rural roads and even some abandoned railroads in the town.
Kevin Schmidt with the Essex County ATV Club says they hope to expand the network to bring more riders and tourism to the area.
"A lot of people from here travel far distances to go have network access to these types of networks, we just don't have it here," says Schmidt. "We think it will bring some people down."
He says a lot of people here travel far distances to have network access.
"We currently have two pieces of property we're able to ride on through private land use agreements and we're looking to expand that to include access on county roads, basically rural roads, not downtown or anything like that," he says. "And possibly look at abandoned railroads."
Schmidt says they have approached Tourism Windsor-Essex-Pelee Island about promoting ATV trails in this area as well.
"They're excited to support us. They said we're a little early meeting with them, unfortunately. We need the infrastructure in place. Once it's there they said they are happy to help us," says Schmidt.
The ATV Club is seeking permission in Amherstburg first, but plans to make similar requests in Essex, Lakeshore, Kingsville, LaSalle and Tecumseh.
A date has not been selected yet for the public meeting.
