The mayor of Amherstburg is hoping to break gound at some point in 2019 on at least one of two hotels coming to the area.
Within two days back in October, two different developers, Amico and Nor-Built Construction, announced they were building two separate hotels in the town.
Amico is building a four-storey boutique style hotel on Dalhouise St. at Gore Street, along with two five-storey waterfront condominiums across the street from the hotel.
Nor-Built Construction is building a new Quality Inn and Suites, at the corner of Simcoe St. and Meloche Rd. near the Libro Credit Union Centre.
"Public meetings were not that well attended, I guess, which is usually a good thing because it means there isn't a lot of opposition I think most people are looking forward to both of them," says Mayor Aldo DiCarlo.
He says both projects still need to go to council but believes there is enough room in Amherstburg for both hotels.
"They both will serve a different purpose," he says. "I think one for sports tourism and one from tourism in general, so we are pretty excited to get them going."
Back in October, Amico also announced plans for 200 residential building lots on the south end of Boblo Island.
The entire cost of the Amico project is about $120-million and the Nor-Built Construction project is valued at between $10-million and $20-million.
