A Windsor teen has been charged after a backyard campfire incident resulted in a man's death.
Police were called to a Windsor hospital Saturday, June 16 at 12:30am for a man with severe burns.
A 20-year-old Windsor man was being treated for life-threatening burns to a large portion of his body.
Police learned earlier in the evening, the victim was at a gathering on Dynasty St. in south Windsor and the group was trying to light up a chiminea for a backyard camp fire.
The fire wasn't lighting up, so an 18-year-old man poured gas into the chiminea, triggering a burst of flames resulting in the victim being severely burned.
On Friday, June 22, the victim died of his injuries.
Windsor Police Sergeant Steve Betteridge says devices like chimineas are not allowed in Windsor.
"Not only is an open air burn like that illegal, the incredible danger that is added to a situation like that if someone adds a flammable to that flame," says Sergeant Betteridge.
The 18-year-old man has been charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death.
Police remind residents that open-air burning is not permitted within city limits.
