The MPP for Chatham-Kent Leamington has one main question regarding Friday's fatal crash on the 401--why?
"This are perfectly good road conditions, excellent weather, good road conditions but all of a sudden you have a transport that is crossing the median, the question is why," says MPP Rick Nicholls.
Nicholls says his government is committed to installing concrete barriers along the 401 from Chatham-Kent to London, but drivers need to take some responsibility for their actions.
Around 7am Friday, a westbound transport truck driver lost control, crossed the centre median and struck an eastbound transport truck. One driver died.
Nicholls points out while concrete barriers would have prevented the crossover crash, the truck could have also bounced off the barrier and struck vehicles in the same lane.
He questions whether other options should be considered including stricter licencing laws for truck drivers.
He also doesn't believe the Liberal's decision of installing high-tension cable barriers will solve any issues.
"To build those cable barriers and then later to put concrete barriers to me is a waste of taxpayer dollars," he says. "So why don't we stop that and proceed with concrete barriers, but that's a decision that the new transport minister will make."
The new Minister of Transportation will be named a week from today and Nicholls plans to bring up the 401 in Chatham-Kent once the minister is up to speed on the portfolio.
