Plans to move an abandoned house from Olde Sandwich Towne to Ford City have been put on hold because of a legal dispute between the Ambassador Bridge Company and the City of Windsor.
Kay Meagher says the home is owned by the Canadian Transit Corporation — the company that owns the Ambassador Bridge.
Meagher says the bridge company agreed to give it to her, but in a council vote Monday night, the plan was denied as the property is part of a lawsuit before the courts.
"It's a beautiful house and it would look beautiful on my lot and it's a shame to let it just waste away and cause problems for the neighbourhood," she says. "I want to save it, recycle it, make it a home again and the city won't let me."
The plan is to move the three bedroom, ranch-style home to a lot on Drouillard Rd.
"This is my dream home, my last home. So my future is in the hands of the city," says Meagher. "The house is just sitting there waiting for more vandalism. We're taking an eyesore from one neighbourhood and creating a beautiful house in another neighbourhood. So that kills two birds with one stone. To me, that's the ideal situation."
City Solicitor Shelby Askin-Hager says Windsor's demolition control bylaw calls for a valid re-development plan which the city is yet to see from the bridge company for any of the properties it owns in Olde Sandwich Town.
