Horse racing fans across Essex County can get back out to the track.
The Ontario Government announced outdoor horse racing tracks could start holding races with spectators up to 25 per cent capacity starting July 1. It's part of the second phase of the provinces COVID-19 reopening plan that goes into effect on June 30.
Tom Bain is an executive member of the Lakeshore Horse Racing Association and says organizers weren't sure if Leamington Raceway would be able to kick off its season in August.
"Being able to have it now allows us to start planning right away and for our fans to come in," he added.
Bain says people will only be allowed inside the building to bet or use the washrooms, so grandstand space is key.
"We are presently in stages of renovations for grandstands," he says. "That will allow us to bring in those people at 25 per cent capacity, so we'll be allowed to have 250 people or a little more than that."
Keeping spectators out of the building shouldn't be an issue in Leamington, according to Bain.
"Certainly this works out well for us because, as far as being indoors, we have a small area only," he added.
Bain says those who wish to hit the track must reserve a ticket, as walk-ins aren't allowed under the reopening guidelines.
Races will begin at Leamington Raceway on the weekend of Aug. 8 with post time set for 1 p.m.
