A Leamington man accused in the death of his best friend sent a text stating he and was friend were considering suicide.
Testimony has begun in the first degree murder trial for 47-year old Andrew Cowan who is charged in the death of 53-year old Edward Witt.
In October 2012, Cowan was driving Witt's pick-up truck when he failed to make a turn driving 145km/hour, drove up a flower embankment in Leamington, went airborne and into the second floor of a building.
Jurors heard the two friends were gambling at the casino prior to the crash and both lost money.
Before the crash, Cowan texted another friend stating "Ed and I are considering suicide tonight. See you in heaven."
The trial has heard Cowan was taking medication for depression.
In his opening statement, assistant crown Tom Meehan addressed the jurors saying "why did Andrew Cowan act in such an inexplicable way to kill himself and his best friend."
The crown expects to call 20-25 witnesses and the trial is scheduled to last 3-4 weeks.
