Leamington council has approved an additional $254,656 for the Waterfront Destination Market Plaza after construction costs came in higher than expected.
Town staff said the increase is tied to a number of unforeseen challenges and design changes, including upgrades for permanent vendor spaces, additional electrical infrastructure, modified stage foundations, dewatering work and extra seating.
Despite the additional funding, staff say the project remains within its overall approved budget.
Total project costs are projected at about $6.27 million, leaving roughly $11,000 remaining from the combined municipal and provincial fund.
The waterfront plaza is being designed to support future vendor operations while serving as a hub for events, vendors and seasonal programming, including BREW on the 42.
Council also approved a new five-year lease agreement with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation for the Leamington dock lands at 500 Erie Street South.
The agreement allows the town to continue using the waterfront property for public access, vendors, food and beverage services, and community events, with an option to renew for another five years.
