It's a win for the fans at the St. Denis Centre as the Lancer women's basketball team steam rolled the rival Western Mustangs.
The Lancers won 70-48 on Wednesday night, improving to 9-2 on the season and into sole possession of first place in the west division. The Mustangs are now 5-6 on the season.
Lancer forward Cheyanne Roger says playing the team from London is always an easy one to get up for.
"They're definitely good games," says Roger. "I mean, today they didn't have all their posts, so we didn't get that same amount of physicality that we usually get, but I'm sure some of them will be back for Saturday's game. It's always fun playing them."
Roger says despite topping the Mustangs by 22 points, the Lancers still have work to do to reach the team's championship expectations.
"We're not where we need to be and we have a short amount of time to get there, but I think if we keep working hard like we have been and making steps in the right direction we're going to be good," says Roger.
Where the team needs to improve is in its own zone according to Roger.
"Defensively, we need to kind of step it up and be more physical with other teams," says Roger. "Some quarters we're on we see sometimes we kind of slack off or maybe we're a little tired and that just comes with the mental aspect of the game and being focused. Maybe I am tired, but you have to push it."
Caitlyn Longmuir lead the way with 17 points while Emily Prevost finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
The Lancers are up against the Mustangs again in London on Saturday for the second half of the home and home series. Tip-off is set for 1pm.
The men's basketball squad stayed perfect to start the year with an 85-78 win over the Mustangs.
The Lancers are now 7-4 on the season, sitting in first place in the OUA west division.
Chatham native Luke Allin lead the way for the Lancers scoring 21 points and grabbing eight rebounds while guard Mike Rocca added 14 points.
The men are heading to London on Saturday for a 3pm tip-off.
