Lancer standouts Krystin Lawrence and Corey Bellemore are taking the top two prizes at the University of Windsor Athletes of the Year Evening of Excellence.
Both have won the awards for the top female and male athlete respectively.
For Bellemore, it's his second straight year grabbing the prize. The track star focusing on 800m and 1500m events hopes to follow in the footsteps of another Lancer alumnus — Olympian Melissa Bishop.
"Definitely hoping so," says Bellemore. "Her big breakthrough came right after university, so I'm hoping mine can come at that time and hopefully this summer is a big one."
Bellemore is taking a year off to train now after running track at the university for five years.
"It's been incredible. I know within our team and even the Lancer community, it's been like a family. Everyone is so welcoming and supportive. I couldn't have asked for a better time over these last five years."
Lawrence had a breakout season for the Lancers, playing for both the university's soccer and hockey teams.
The Tecumseh-native recorded shutouts in half of her starts on the pitch and was named an OUA Soccer First Team All-Star as the Lancers reached the O-U-T Women's Soccer Final Four. On the ice, she scored 23 goals and 32 points to win her second straight OUA scoring title.
The third year standout was named the overall OUA women's hockey player of the year and also a U SPORTS all-Canadian for the first time in her career.
Julia Barile walked away with the Captain's Trophy into her fifth year as captain of the Lancer women's soccer team and says the awards gala is a great opportunity to soak it all in.
"Time flies," says Barile. "You blink and you're almost done. I'm just trying to enjoy the final year that I have and have some fun."
Bellemore finished first overall at the OUA Cross Country Championships and inside on the track, finished with three medals at the OUA championships while at nationals he grabbed three more medals.
