The University of Windsor has named the new head coach of its football program.
J.P. Circelli comes to Windsor from the Western Mustangs, where he spent the past four seasons as offensive line coach.
The Mustangs have been among the national leaders in scoring, rushing and total yards during that time, when Western won two straight Yates Cup titles, made back-to-back appearances in the Vanier Cup and won a Canadian university championship in 2017.
Circelli was a standout offensive lineman at McMaster University from 2001-05, where he was part of three straight OUA football titles and was a team captain his senior year.
Lancers Athletic Director Mike Havey says he's thrilled to welcome Circelli and his family to the university.
"J.P. is a passionate coach and leader and he is very highly regarded in the football community," says Havey. "He has been successful at every level at which he has coached or played, and he has had championship level success throughout his coaching career."
Circelli says he's looking forward to what he calls a "tremendous opportunity" to lead and develop a team that the university and community can be proud of.
"Achieving success both on and off the field will be fundamental goals of our football program," says Circelli. "I can't wait to get started."
His brother Joe will join him in Windsor as offensive co-ordinator. Joe Circelli was most recently the defensive line coach at Western and was the program's recruiting co-ordinator. He was drafted into the CFL by the Calgary Stampeders as an offensive lineman and played two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts.
J.P. Circelli will be introduced to the media and the community at a special event at the University of Windsor on Friday, February 1.
