The University of Windsor Athletic Department has announced the new coach for the men's basketball program
Chris Cheng has been hired — effective immediately — he comes from Nipissing University in North Bay, where he's been for the past five years and becomes just the sixth head coach in the history of the program.
"We are delighted to welcome Chris Cheng as our new head men's basketball coach," said Director of Athletics Mike Havey. "Chris has an impressive coaching resume and brings with him over 15 years of coaching experience at the post-secondary level. His experience as an assistant coach at multiple institutions, coaching high performance athletes with Team Ontario and Team Canada as well as the last five seasons as head coach at Nipissing University position him well for this new opportunity at the University of Windsor. We are excited by Chris' commitment to a values-based coaching philosophy focused on a culture of family and excellence."
In addition to his experience coaching in U SPORTS and the OUA, Cheng has an extensive resume with both the Canadian national and Ontario provincial programs. Currently, he is an assistant coach with the Junior National team for Canada Basketball and he will be joining Team Canada in preparation for the U19 FIBA World Cup in Greece at the end of June.
Cheng is a graduate from York University where he earned a Sociology Degree and an Education Degree. He is also currently completing his Masters of Kinesiology at Nipissing University.
He takes over for Chris Oliver who stepped down in March.
