Lakeshore is penning a letter to "re-focus the conversation" on the location of a new regional hospital.
Council unanimously agreed to back the motion from Ward 1 Councillor Steven Wilder Tuesday night. He says there's a silent majority that wants the regional facility — that's being paid for by the entire county — to move forward before the province gets cold feet from infighting.
That infighting is being stirred up by Citizens for an Accountable Mega-Hospital Planning Process. The group has been loud in its opposition of a new hospital out on County Rd. 42 near Windsor International Airport, saying it needs to be in the city's core to better serve Windsor residents.
Wilder says a letter will be sent to every municipality, MP and MPP in Windsor-Essex seeking support to show the province the majority of the region is in favour of the current plan.
"We need a hospital for this area and that's what this is about. I'm hoping that every single one of them, the city of Windsor included, endorses the motion," he says. "There's a large silent majority that absolutely wants us to proceed and wants to proceed as soon as possible, in the current location in an area that's going to service all of Windsor and Essex County, not just the city of Windsor."
He tells AM800 news the focus is being tilted towards appeals of a "loud minority" and it doesn't reflect the other 50 per cent of the county's population that lives outside the city's borders.
"A lot of the arguments say, 'it needs to serve the downtown core, it needs to serve the residents of Windsor, the densest population in Windsor,'" he says. "It completely misses the point that this hospital needs to serve Essex County as well."
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and County Warden Gary McNamara stepped forward to back the "silent majority," shortly after Wilder announced his motion last week.
