Workers with Heligear-Northstar Aerospace in Lakeshore are on strike.
Members with Unifor Local 444 rejected a tentative agreement as 51% voted against the proposed deal, sending the workers to the picket line.
The ratification vote was held at 10 am on Sunday.
Unifor Local 444 president Dino Chiodo says there's no timeline on how long the strike will last.
He told AM800 news there needs to be more dialogue before any issues can be resolved.
"It's not a matter of us just demanding and the company giving. It's a matter of us really sitting down with the company and putting components forward the company agrees to and understands," he says. "At the same time, with the company wanting to try and facilitate necessary improvements that the membership deserves."
He says the company employs more than 60 people.
Issues with wages and shift length aren't universal, and Chiodo says it makes negotiations a challenge.
"They all have different qualifications to do different sets of jobs," says Chiodo. "That being said, individuals are looking for improvements in their section only, not necessarily for the overall picture of the facility. That becomes a little challenging to try and put that all together."
Money and overtime are key sticking points in voting down the deal, but additional hours go hand in hand with expansion according to Chiodo.
"Other workers might be making a little more than them, or they may be getting forced overtime when they don't want to, they've never been forced before. So there's concerns," he says. "When you're talking about increasing production, when you're talking about bidding on new contract work and expanding the operation, those are necessities in order to grow the business."
Chiodo says the union is waiting to hear back from the company on when talks will resume but hopes it will be sometime Monday.
