A Kingsville tomato processing plant has been fined close to $300,000.
The fine was issued to Sun Brite Canning by the Ministry of the Environment.
The company was convicted of 2 offences under the Ontario Water Resources Act and one under the Environmental Protection Act.
The fine was $230,000 with a surcharge of $57,500.
The court found the company guilty of releasing process water into a municipal drain in September 2015 and not reporting it to the ministry.
Residents near the plant on County Road 34 complained of smelling sewage in the drain.
Ministry staff investigated and saw a discharge flow from the plant that was black-grey in colour and smelled of sulphur.
The company was ordered to halt the flow and initiate a cleanup which they did.
