WINDSOR — A Kingsville councillor wants to see if the town can go on a 'salt diet.'
Thomas Neufeld will be asking for a report at Monday night's council meeting to see if there are any alternatives instead of using salt for sidewalks and roads in the winter.
"We have gotten complaints from residents just with the amount of salt that is being applied," he says. "Residents who are walking their dogs, sometimes the amount of salt is hurting their dog's feet."
He adds the salt has to go somewhere after it is applied to the roads and sidewalks too.
"There is often complaints about vegetation being killed because of the amount of salt, trees, what is the amount of salt runoff going into the lakes and rivers."
He points out other options can include brine, sand or beet juice but he wants council to do, "a little investigation to see what the options are."
Neufeld expects a report back within a month or so, but he says given that we are heading into the spring and summer, it is not an urgent matter.
