Kids and cops are gone fishing this morning.
The 59th annual Kids Fishing Derby is taking over Reaume and Assumption Parks in Windsor from 8am until 12pm. Kids 12 years old and under will recieve free bait and other prizes.
Organizer Doug Brunelle has been part of the event as far back as he can remember.
Growing up, his father was involved in putting on the derby, and Brunelle says it's something he wants to see other kids enjoy.
"I've been at this event since I was a kid," says Brunelle. "My dad used to be in charge of running it with the other guys here, you know he was doing it when I was young, I'll always volunteer. It's great, that's what it's all about, seeing those kids with that fish in their hands."
Brunelle says it's a good way to get kids out of the house and maybe pick-up the past-time.
"It's a fun day for the kids to get out there and learn about fishing," says Brunelle. "You always hear, get them off the electronics for a day and enjoy fishing, it's a great activity."
No registration is required for the event.
Brunelle says you never know what's you're going to pull-out of the river.
"When I was younger, in my early '20s, when my dad was still doing it, I know we pulled out a 30 inch salmon, two years ago we pulled out a 52 inch sturgeon," says Brunelle. "Being the Detroit River you never know what you're going to catch."
Brunelle says fish that are reeled in are measured for prizes and returned to the river to live another day.
