The latest temperature drop in Windsor-Essex has a landscape technology professor at St. Clair College offering some tips to keep your outdoor plants safe.
Sandy McDonald says if you're able to, it's important to bring your plants in doors.
He says if you can't, they should be covered because the cold along with frost could kill them.
"Any of our tender plants that we may have put out, they are going to need some protection," says McDonald. "This highly unusual. "So a few things we can do, one of the first things, the easier one, if you have plants in containers or pots or hanging baskets that sort of thing, then certainly bring them into the garage or even the basement of the house."
McDonald says if you're covering your plants, avoid using plastic.
"A lot of people think plastic is one of the first things to go to but it's probably one of the least desirable items," says McDonald. "So think maybe about other things such as tarps or old towels, even some bed sheets."
He says if you don't take precautions, your plants might not make it.
"It all depends up on your location and again the further we get away from the city into the county of course, we're more likely to have a colder temperature and those people who are in lower spots, frost pockets people who are away from the lakes are more likely to have more severe damage," says McDonald.
A frost advisory was issued for Windsor-Essex on Friday with frigid overnight temps expected until Wednesday.
