A thumbs up from former Essex MP Jeff Watson on the Conservative Party's choice for a new leader.
Saskatchewan MP Andrew Scheer was selected garnering 51% of the vote, edging out front-runner Maxime Bernier.
Watson has been a long-time Scheer supporter and says he's looking forward to the future.
"He just presents such a clear and positive direction for the country under important Conservative principles," says Watson. "I think he's focusing on the right things. It may not always be exciting, but these little policy decisions along the way will matter in the home level, the kitchen table level for people's families."
Watson believes the extended leadership race benefited the Scheer campaign.
"The length ensured that people ran a marathon, not a short sprint. So the 'flash in the pan' names like Kevin O'Leary really fell by the wayside. It allowed people who wouldn't have otherwise known Andrew in the process to get to know him. And now, as the leader, Andrew will get to know the rest of Canadians beyond the Conservative membership."
The 38-year-old Scheer was chosen to lead the Conservatives after 13 rounds of voting by party members Saturday — Bernier had led through the first 12 rounds.
He takes over for the party's interim leader Rona Ambrose. Canada's next federal election takes place October 21, 2019.
