A Windsor man is going to jail for a hit-and-run crash that left a pedestrian severely injured.
In May of 2017, John Vaillancourt struck a 60-year old man who was walking on Ouellette Ave. at Montrose St. and was dragged 90-feet, suffering severe brain injuries and still lives in constant pain.
The 49-year old Vaillancourt pleaded guilty to failing to remain at the scene of a crash and was sentenced to four-months in jail.
Defence lawyer Frank Retar says his client panicked and left. "He was stressed out, made a bad decision and drove away and that's going to cost him 120 days in jail."
Retar adds that his client didn't realize he had hit someone because of the elevated nature of his truck.
"It took him that long time, turning into the traffic to in fact recognize that he was dragging something along" says Retar. "(He) stopped, went back, saw there were others already rendering assistance, made a bad decision and left."
Assistant Crown Brian Manarin believes the four-month jail sentence is fair, and was the result of a guilty plea to leaving the scene of an accident, not for causing the crash.
After being sentenced, Vaillancourt waved to his 18-year old son and was led off to jail.
