Windsor-Essex is experiencing its first taste of winter weather.
Snowfall started in parts of the county early this morning and are expected to continue in Windsor-Essex throughout the evening.
Environment Canada Meteorologist, Geoff Coulson says this is the first widespread lake effect snow event of the season. "We've got some colder air coming down from northern Ontario, it's crossing the warmer than normal waters of Lake Michigan and that's generating this lake effect snow. Some of these bands of snow are actually extending all the way from Lake Michigan all the way into the extreme southwestern Ontario areas," says Coulson.
He adds "there are snowsquall warnings in effect north east of Windsor-Essex so for those planning travel to parts of Lambton County, Elgin, Middlesex and up into the Huron-Perth county areas, they would be influenced by these northwest winds coming in off Lake Huron. We really expect these bands of snow to get going off Lake Huron late this afternoon, overnight tonight and during the day on Friday."
Temperatures will be more seasonal as we head into mid-December and we can expect the current snowfall to stick around on the ground in some parts of the region, at least over the weekend.
Coulson says it's still too soon to tell if we will have a white Christmas.
