Local health officials are trying to raise awareness about preventing fall, especially in seniors.
In Windsor-Essex, falls account for 1 in 3 of all injury-related emergency department visits for people over the age of 65.
November is Fall Prevention Month.
Manager of the Regional Trauma Program and Injury Prevention at Windsor Regional Hospital Diane Bradford says it's not just about a broken bone as falls sometime cause a head injury with complications.
"If a fall is the reason that we see you at our trauma centre, it tends to be really bad and that means it doesn't take much for the type of injury that we see to kill you and unfortunately a lot of what we see is a major head injury," says Bradford.
Bradford says they are seeing a trend when it comes to men falling.
"In particular those between the ages of 55 and 64, because men tend to still get up on ladders and use scaffolding around their home and also with stairs injuries."
She says 75% of seniors over the age of 65 who have fallen resulting in a hip fracture, won't be able to return home to live independently.
Several free fall prevention screening clinics are taking place.
