2016 will be remembered as a very expensive year for the insurance industry.
From the wild fires in Fort McMurray, Alberta to flooding in Windsor-Essex, 2016 saw a record-breaking $5-billion in claims nation-wide and that's expected to lead to a boost in premiums.
At Southland Insurance in Windsor, Operations Manager Christine Paquette says, "if you're shopping around, there are a few things to keep in mind. We want to make sure that you have a comprehensive policy, if it is available, because that is typically the best you can buy. The biggest optional coverage that I can not stress enough that people should be aware of is sewer backup, especially in our local area."
Paquette told AM800's 'The Afternoon News' damage from severe weather is among the top claims filed every year.
