Local paramedics and Windsor Regional Hospital are getting some upgraded technology to help local heart attack patients.
When a person has a heart attack, paramedics perform diagnostic tests called a "12-lead ECG." Currently, the paramedic has to radio or phone in the results of the test.
With new technology, the cardiologist at the hospital will be able to see the results of the test live and will be able to direct the patient to either the emergency room or the cath lab.
Essex-Windsor EMS Chief Bruce Krauter says the changes from the diagnostic test dictates the level of care for the patient.
"It is going to save time and it is actually going to be patient focused for better outcomes of that patient because time is what saves the patient," says Chief Krauter. "The quicker we can get them into a cath lab, the better chance of survival."
Chief Krauter says the new program has been in the works for about a year. He hopes the improved technology will be in place by early next year.
