Fiery crash on Hwy. 401 forces overnight closure.

Hwy. 401 is open again after a fiery crash forced an overnight closure in the eastbound lanes at Orford Rd. in Chatham-Kent, past Thamesville.

Part of the highway was closed at about 10pm on Saturday after the crash involving two transport trucks. It reopened at 5:30am on Sunday.

Elgin County OPP are investigating after a transport heading eastbound on the highway near Blacks Rd. was hit from behind by another transport. The rear transport caught fire and was fully engulfed in flames.

Two men were sent to hospital with only minor injuries — the drivers of the trucks.

The highway was closed from Exit 117 in Chatham-Kent to Exit 129.

Police contacted the Ministry of the Environment because of diesel fuel which leaked onto the highway.

No word yet from police on any charges.
