Hundreds of families will be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal because of the generosity of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
CUPE Local 543 is supplyng 500 turkeys and the trimmings to ten local food banks to be distributed ahead of the holiday.
They're also contributing 100 chickens for people who may not have a family to celebrate with.
150 of the dinners are being distributed at the Unemployed Help Centre on Cantelon Dr..
Claudia is grateful for the help.
"It means quite a lot because times are hard and we use the small money that we get we don't have the chance to get everything" says Claudia. "So every time we come here I have to confess this has to continue because it helps people like us."
Local 543 Treasurer David Pettan says they not only donate the food, they volunteer at five of the food banks.
"You know this is the best part of it, so basically what happens is that a week before we get together and we package the produce, the potatoes and things like that" says Pettan. " And that's great, it's physical activity for us. When we actually get to the give back part of it, when we have people that are coming out and receiving it. It just makes us so much thankful."
Unemployed Help Centre CEO June Muir says this is one of the ways they help people in need.
"It makes us feel really good because we're able to help families" says Muir. "They're people like you and me and they've fallen on tough times and they need some help atThanksgiving, so we're here to provide those turkey dinners along with CUPE."
In addition to the turkeys the families receive potatoes, other vegetables and apples.
