The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society is preparing to host a major adoption event as the shelter is dealing with capacity issues involving dogs.
A dog adoption event is planned for July 6 to July 8 as the humane society has around 50 dogs currently in its care.
Typically, the shelter has 15 to 20 dogs available for adoption.
Executive director Melanie Coulter says a lot of the dogs up for adoption are larger dogs.
"It's very easy for us to find homes typically for smaller dogs, they get adopted quickly, " she says. "It's those larger dogs, those medium to large sized dogs that tend to take a little bit longer. There's quite a variety, people can check Windsor humane dot org and check out who we have available right now."
In the first half of 2023, surrendered dog intake increased by 62 per cent at the humane society and stray dog intake increased by 42 per cent, placing a strain on available kennel space.
All dogs who have been available for adoption for more than 30 days, who are over 100 lbs, and over 4 years of age will be free. All other dogs will have their adoption fees reduced by 50 per cent.
Coulter says all the dogs come with a standard adoption package.
"They're all spayed and neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, age appropriate vaccines, and they come with two training sessions with our behaviour team to help fit in to their new homes," she says.
The special dog adoption event will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 6-8 from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the Humane Society.
For the duration of this event all dog adoption applications will be accepted in person only.
Online applications will be paused for dogs, but will still be available for cats and small animals.
The humane society is located at 1375 Provincial Rd. in Windsor.
