It's a first for the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society.
In 2018, the organization will begin offering dog control services in the Town of Amherstburg.
Executive Director Melanie Coulter says this is the first time they've offered the service outside of the City of Windsor.
She says they have the resources and capacity to handle the extra work.
"Our officers are already out on the road. So it will be different. They'll be in Amherstburg a lot more frequently I'm sure. We're looking forward to working with the town. They've been a good partner. They've been receptive to programs like the cat voucher program and moving forward with that. So we look at this as a really positive development."
Coulter says they've taken dogs from Amherstburg in the past free of charge.
"There are at least a handful of calls that we receive or people that bring stray dogs from Amherstburg to us because they want to see them be part of our adoption program if they're not claimed. So we already were getting some Amherstburg dogs and have been over previous years from various county municipalities."
She says she's hoping other county municipalities consider a move like this too.
"In the past, a lot of small rural municipalities just looked at having a dog pound, but now, I think, a lot of municipalities and residents of those municipalities are expecting a higher level of service. So they want a shelter and a humane society and we're happy to be able to offer them here and certainly we'd be open to talking to anyone else as well."
Coulter adds, for the past number of years Amherstburg has been using a private contractor to catch stray dogs.
Amherstburg Council has agreed to set aside $40,000 in its 2018 budget for the service.
