A serious injury during the construction of the Southwest Detention Centre has led to almost half a million dollars in fines.
A worker who was cleaning a circuit breaker compartment in May 2013 came in contact with live electricity. An arc flash and ball of fire caused the worker severe injury and sent him to hospital.
Three companies were charged with failing to ensure there was no live electricity in an area where a worker could be exposed.
They were convicted in May and have now been issued fines.
The largest fine of over $200,000 went to Toromont Industries of the Toronto area which employed the worker.
JMR Electric of Exeter and general contractor for the project — Bondfield Construction from the Greater Toronto Area — are ordered to pay smaller amounts.
