The Honeywell property on Front Road in Amherstburg has a date with the wrecking ball.
In a recent statement, the company says its made the decision to permanently close the site and demolish all remaining buildings.
Amherstburg CAO John Miceli says Honeywell has committed to following all Ministry of Environment guidelines while cleaning up the site with a plan of putting it up for sale once it's clear.
Miceli says the company has already spent a hefty sum on remediation.
"There was about $30-million spent cleaning the site. There's just a few buildings remaining on the site. So they're going to go through and demolish them, get them all cleared. It was quite the process. So they did what they had to do and they've received the clearances from the Ministry of Environment."
He says the town is looking forward to seeing a new tenant at the site.
"It's a fantastic site with regards to it being strategically located. It does offer transportation by rail and water. They've got a water treatment plant. There's a number of benefits that site does have that I believe is going to make it pretty attractive for any development going forward."
Miceli says the town and the Windsor-Essex Economic Development Corporation are already shopping the site around.
"We work with WEEDC on that endeavour right? So WEEDC knows that that's one of the properties in this region that is available for re-development and if there's an opportunity for it to be utilized in its best capacity it does have all those amenities to offer any future development."
No timeline has been set for the demolition, but Miceli says he believes Honeywell is looking to get the property up for sale in the very near future.
The plant has been closed since August 2014.
