For the second stratight year, the homicide rate fell in Detroit.
Police Chief James Craig says the preliminary count shows there were 261 murders in the Motor City, which would be the lowest in 52 years since 214 homicides in 1966.
Craig tells The Detroit News he's pleased with the decline from 2017 and 2016, but says more work needs to be done.
Due to population declines over the past five decades, the murder rate in 2018 was more than double the rate from 1966 with 39 per 100-thousand residents compared to 14 per 100-thousand the last time the overall number was down to this level.
