Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Windsor-Essex due to a thunderstorm system moving into the area that could bring 40 to 60 millimetres of rain with it.
The weather service says that the thunderstorms will begin this afternoon and last into the evening, possibly overnight.
Environment Canada meteorologist Steven Flisfeder says there will be lightning activity with these thunderstorms.
"There will be torrential rainfall with these storms as they come through. The biggest risk is because of the orientation of the storms; you could get multiple thunderstorms passing over the same area, and that's when you would start to get into those high accumulations," he says.
Flisfeder says the system is coming into the region from Michigan.
"The biggest threat associated with this is the heavy rainfall amounts. Torrential rain is going to be possible, heavy downpours, and areas that get multiple storms coming over them across the day will have that potential for those high rainfall accumulations," he says.
Flisfeder says how these storms develop will impact which areas of Windsor-Essex get the most rain.
"Not everywhere is going to see those upper ends of the 40 to 60 millimetres," he says. "Some areas could see as little as five millimeters- maybe even less. It's all going to depend on how these storms track and how they evolve through the afternoon and evening."
Along with the heavy rainfall, other weather factors, such as hail, wind, and lightning, are also possible.
Environment Canada warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
