The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is sharing tips about how to stay healthy during the holiday season.
The Health Unit's Health Promotion Specialist, Jenny Diep, says more people tend to visit hospitals and clinics during this time of year.
She says many common holiday illnesses can be prevented by following some easy steps.
First, she says it is important to look after yourself before others to avoid spreading illnesses.
"Protecting yourself is really important to protecting your loved ones," says Diep. "A few things you can do is avoid hugging and kissing your friends and relatives who are not sick, and want to wash your hands often."
She says people who cover their mouths when coughing are less likely to spread their illness to others.
"The flu and respiratory illnesses are something that we spread easily through sneezing, coffing and talking," says Diep.
Diep also says the symptoms of illnesses can be somewhat insidious and not always noticeable to those who have them.
"You can spread [the illness] even before you show any signs of symptoms," she says. "So for example, the flu is one to four days before which is what we call the incubation period."
Diep says constantly washing your hands after coming into contact with surfaces is the best way to prevent getting sick this season.
The Health Unit also recommends getting a flu shot from a local drug store.
