The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is applauding the Federal Government for wanting to make changes to Canada's Food Guide.
Health Canada announced earlier this week that it would be seeking public input to improve the guide.
Public Health Nutritionist with the health unit, Mariel Munoz Tayraco says it's too early to know what the changes will be.
She says Health Canada is just starting the revision process.
"We work with our residents on a day-to-day basis and we do hear some of these challenges and it is estimated that around 88% of Canadians believe that healthy eating is important," Tayraco says. "But what we're seeing is that the majority of Canadians actually need to change our current food habits to be able to improve the quality of our diet."
A Senate committee study released in March found the food guide is no longer effective in providing nutritional guidance and needs a makeover. The public is invited to take the online survey here.
