City police along with bylaw enforcement officers from the city and health unit will be at Devonshire Mall on Saturday for the planned no face mask shopping trip.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says the agencies are in contact and have been discussing ways to approach the situation.
As heard on AM800 news earlier this week, members of a local Facebook group called Questioning Covid in Windsor-Essex have planned a mask-free shopping trip to the mall on Howard Avenue.
According to the page, the goal of the trip is to find stores that respect mask exemptions and shop at only those stores.
Dr. Ahmed says the health unit's order and city bylaw must be followed.
"The law is there for everyone and it takes consideration for all these people, all these nuances," he says. "So it's unfortunate that we are having this conversation and it just basically bothers me."
"People who are trying to present that they're having the voice of everyone out there, they're not, there are just few handful of people, they are in every forum," Dr. Ahmed added.
He believes the organizers of the shopping trip feel they're the voice for everyone.
"There's a huge difference with people who are unable to wear the mask versus who do not want to wear the mask and I think people if they do not want to wear the mask, fair enough but do it where you can, you cannot and you should not do it in places which is accessible to public," says Dr. Ahmed. "What about the rights of the rest of the people."
Dr. Ahmed would not say if fines will be issued to those who take part in the shopping trip which is planned for 2 p.m.
The health unit issued a face covering order for Windsor-Essex at the end of June while a number of local municipalities including Windsor have adopted masks bylaws.
