A Harrow winery is growing in a big way.
Colio Estates Winery is spending $1.5-million to add new capacity at its facility in Harrow.
Company President Jim Clark told AM800's 'The Afternoon News' that the additional pressing equipment will bring the entire wine-making process in-house, with 12 new-tanks mean the winery can take in additional grapes and staff can keep up.
"The investment will allow another 935,000 litres of capacity," says Clark. "Another 600-tonnes, that's a huge increase, it's been quite a strain on the team down there. It has been an interesting harvest in that it's been late starting and prolonged. It's new territory for us, over 2,000-tonnes of grapes were brought in this year."
Clark adds that expansion projects are vital not only to the communities that host wineries, but to the province as a whole.
The wine industry is worth $4.4 billion to the provincial economy, and it has been estimated that every $10 spent on Ontario Vineyard Quality Association wines generates $40 in economic activity.
