The move is being made to help fight a rodent problem in the town

Changes are coming to garbage collection in Tecumseh.

As of January 1st, residents will need to put out their trash in a hard-sided garbage container.

Mayor Gary McNamara says the move is an effort to reduce the number of rats and other rodents in town. "It's not just an isolated area. We've seen some in two or three other areas within Ward 1 and also in Ward 2. Bottom line is they need habitat and they need food, food sources. So limit the food sources."

McNamara says Windsor adopted a similar program a couple of years ago and has seen a definite decline in the rodent population.

The town will be advertising as well as sending out a flyer to all residents to inform them of the change.

More information about which containers can and cannot be used will be posted on the town of Tecumseh website.
