Windsor Regional Hospital will begin to use hand held metal detectors at the mental health ward.
This comes after a weekend stabbing at the Ouellette Campus.
On Tuesday, hospital officials and staff met to go over safety procedures and policies.
The hospital says it is finalizing recommendations and creating a broader mental health team.
The team will focus on an exact process patients should follow when returning from day passes and to codify the process that is currently used to clear a patient for a day pass.
The hand held metal detectors may also be used elsewhere in the hospital.
Windsor police say a stabbing took place Saturday afternoon near the main lobby of the Ouellette Campus.
According to police, a 17-year-old male patient from the hospital had been walking with a relative, approaching the elevators.
Police say as a 26-year-old female patient at the hospital got off the elevators, the 17-year-old pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman in the back of the neck.
The relative of the offender quickly restrained and disarmed the teen.
The victim received immediate medical attention and is recovering in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 17-year-old male, who can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with one count of aggravated assault.
The Major Crimes Brach continues to investigate.
It's not believed that the victim and the accused knew one another.
