The 64th Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex Build has come to a close with the Beachamp family officially receiving their new 1,100 sq. ft. home Saturday.
Hundreds of volunteers helped get Kelly Beachamp and her three children into their new digs at 64 Askew St. in Leamington.
Beachamp tells CTV News it's hard expressing her gratitude.
"I'm really overwhelmed. I don't think any words can describe it, it's just amazing, it's a dream come true," she says.
After 500 hours of "sweat equity" Beachamp says finally getting to the end of the road is exhilarating.
"It's just been a real big journey. Five years ago I told my children in five years I'm going to be out of debt and I'm going to have enough for a down payment for a house and I was going to do this all by myself," says Beachamp. "I am out of debt and my first pay cheque with no garnishment was yesterday so I was like yes."
Habitat's Executive Director Fiona Coughlin says the town was instrumental in making the build happen, selling the original home that was demolished for $1.
She points to neighbouring homes under renovation as a trickledown effect of a new build in an old neighbourhood.
"It's a really unique parallel because we see the transformation in the Beachamp family's life over the course of the build, but we also see the transformation in this neighbourhood," says Coughlin.
The Libro Credit Union donated $20,000 and sent more than 30 staff members out on the build.
