A Windsor man, who has shown no remorse for the crime he committed, has been sentenced for a shooting in Old Walkerville.
The judge accepted a joint submission from the crown and defence in sentencing 22-year-old Kyle Allen Williston to six years and nine months in prison after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of a prohibited firearm and other offences.
In June 2016, police were called for a shooting at the Tim Horton's on Wyandotte St. after a man was shot in the abdomen during a drug deal.
Williston fled the scene and was later arrested on Henry Ford Blvd.
During the sentencing hearing, court heart Williston has shown no remorse for the victim and there is little interest in rehabilitation.
Williston also suffers from Oppositional Defiance Disorder but Justice Rene Pomerance pointed out that it can't be used to justify the offence.
"Guns don't discriminate," says Assistant Crown Scott Pratt outside of the Superior Courthouse. "If you fire a gun in public, you might hit what you are aiming at or you might not, so that makes it very very serious."
Despite the lack of remorse as he characterizes himself as the victim, Williston's lawyer Linda McCurdy says there is hope for her client.
"He is young, he is only 22, he has got two kids and if he makes up his mind, he wants to do something different and avail himself of the programs they have in custody and when he gets back out to avail him of programs to deal with the issues that he has, I think anyone has a chance at his age."
After being sentenced, Williston hugged his mother, girlfriend and sister who were in court, and then was taken away to begin serving his sentence.
With credit for time already served, he has a further four years and three months in custody.
