A local mother is speaking out about the gun violence facing Windsor teens which claimed the life of her son a few months ago.
On September 8, 2018, 18-year-old Darrion Moffatt died after being shot at a home on Hall Ave. Two Windsor men, aged 18 and 19, are charged with first-degree murder.
Moffatt's mother Carolyn Crankshaw wants to raise awareness about violence facing teens and a candlelight vigil will be held in November.
"My son wasn't affiliated with any Toronto gangs," she says. "He was just a normal teen who was trying to find his place in the world and this could be anyone's kid."
She dropped Darrion off on Hall Ave. to spend a few days with friends when the shooting happened. She believes her son was trying to do the right thing when the shooting happened.
"This really didn't have anything to do with my son, that he was just basically stepping in to try and calm a situation down," she added.
She describes her son as kind, sweet and smart. He was diagnosed with severe depression at the age of 17 and was put on medication but didn't like the way it made him feel.
"He just kinda lost his path once he switched schools," says Crankshaw. "He started getting bullied trying to make friends, he didn't really know anybody."
Crankshaw wants to speak in schools about the consequences of gun violence.
A candlelight vigil will be held on November 28 at 6:30pm at Senator David A Croll Park.
The two accused in the case, 18-year-old Raul Huezo and 19-year-old Cody Kennedy, appear in court later in November.
Back in February, 16-year-old Chance Gauthier was found shot and killed in an alley off Church St. near Erie. A 20-year-old is facing a murder charge.
Jason Pantlitz-Solomon, 20, was gunned down on Ouellette at University around 2:40am on Monday, August 27. Police are still trying to make an arrest in his death and have put out a $5,000 reward.
