The new Gordie Howe International Bridge won't be just for vehicular traffic.
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority has announced that the plans now include a multi-use path for cyclists and pedestrians.
The 3.6 metre path would be separated from traffic with a concrete barrier for safety reasons.
The plan was announced today following public consultations and feedback to address the future needs of the region.
It will be up to the three proponents vying for the job to include the path as part of its plan.
Authority CEO Michael Cautillo says this will make the new border crossing environmentally friendly.
"We have also heard that the inclusion of a multi-use path is environmentally responsible as it will contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint for cross border traffic and will bring new tourism opportunities for the Windsor-Detroit region," says Cautillo.
Authority Board Chair Dwight Duncan says part of the plan is to connect the bike paths from the Herb Gray Parkway to the new bridge which has not been confirmed yet.
"The province also has to construct a little overpass to connect to the new plaza from the Herb Gray Parkway," said Duncan. "So the opportunity is very much there and it was part of the original concept."

The cost has already been included as part of the $2-billion constructions costs.
Cyclists and pedestrians would be required to go through customs.
The new bridge is scheduled to open in 2022.
