General Motors says it is investing $300-million dollars in its Orion Township, MI plant to build a new Chevrolet electric vehicle.
GM CEO Mary Barra was joined by federal, state and local officials for the announcement on Friday.
Barra says it is part of a total investment of $1.8-billion in manufacturing plants in the U.S. across six states.
About 60km north of Detroit, the Orion Township Plant currently produces the Chevrolet Bolt EV — the new vehicle will mean 400 new jobs at the facility.
GM has been under fire for the recent announcement that they will "unallocate" five facilities including the Oshawa GM plant and the Hamtramck Assembly Plant.
The automaker says there are 2,700 openings for the approximately 2,800 workers affected by the recent closings.
