There were over 3million hospitalizations in Canada in 20172018

Giving birth continues to be the most common reason for hospitalization across Canada.

That's according to new data released from the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

The report finds there were over 3-million hospitalizations in 2017–2018, with the top five reasons remaining consistent with those for the previous three years.

362,700 hospitalizations were reported when it came to giving birth. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and bronchitis came in second on the list with 93,353 hospitalizations.

Acute myocardial infarction or heart attacks was third, followed by pneumonia heart failure.

Director, Acute and Ambulatory Care Information Services at CIHI, Greg Webster says the data indicates what's happening across Canada.

"Looking at this pattern of hospitalization, it's clear that we have a growing and aging population," he says. "The rising rate of chronic conditions is associated with the greater need for hospitalization."

Webster says there were also 104,349 C-section deliveries  in 2017-2018.

In both Canada and Ontario, C-section delivery was listed as the top reason for surgery, followed by knee replacement, hip replacement, fracture repair and coronary artery angioplasty.
