Brian Gionta decides to retire from the NHL

NHL forward Brian Gionta has formally announced his retirement and has accepted a role as a developmental coach with the Buffalo Sabres on a part-time basis.

The 5-foot-7 forward lasted 16 NHL seasons and served as captain of the Sabres and Canadiens.

He helped the Devils win the 2003 Stanly Cup and ends his playoff career with 291 goals and 595 points in 1,026 games.

Gionta had seven 20-goal seasons, including a career-high 48 with the 2005-06 Devils.
