The Greater Essex County District School Board is looking to make the high school in Belle River the right size.
The school board has submitted an application for funding to the provincial government.
Superintendent of Education and Accommodations Todd Awender says the board's goal is to tear down the school and rebuild a smaller, modern version of it.
He says they want to turn the school into a 21st century learning environment.
"Right now, I am going to say there are approximately 400 empty spaces there so it fits into the school consolidation capital funding that we submit right now which is different than in the spring, says Awender."
He says the facility condition of the building is a large factor in rebuilding the school.
"We would love to have a new building because, like I said, it does have a high renewal and a high FCI with empty spaces," says Awender. "Whenever we can make 21st century learning environments out of our schools, we would love to do that."
It is now up to the provincial government to decide how much funding the school board will receive, if any.
