The University of Windsor's Faculty of Science is hosting a full day of workshops as part of A Scientist Like Her series.
Registered students will be able to participate in hands-on activities and presentations and interact with UWindsor science students to learn more about university life and careers in science fields.
Michelle Bondy is the Experiential Learning Specialist in Science — she spoke to AM800's Patty Handysides on The Afternoon News.
Bondy says Grade 8 students were chosen as the focus of this year's event.
"They're at the age where they're starting to make decisions about high school and we want to encourage them to take their university level science courses in Grade 9 and stick with science all the way through so that hopefully they'll end up studying science as a post-secondary career choice," she says.
The theme of the day will focus on the hands on fun of many scientific fields, according to Bondy.
"This time we're focusing on chemistry, computer science and environmental science to show them a wide variety of areas that they can get involved in," says Bondy.
Mentors will be presenting all day, something Bondy says will give young women a chance, "to see female scientists at all stages in their careers and have an opportunity to ask questions and see what life is like as a scientist.
The workshops run at the University of Windsor's main campus all day Saturday.
