A financial boost for a local non-profit cooperative.
Windsor's Meta Makers Cooperative has received a $60,000 grant from the federal government under the Community Services Recovery Fund.
Cofounder Nik Steel says Meta Makers launched in 2019 and is the region's only cooperative makerspace.
He says the grant will be used to purchase equipment for the makerspace.
"A few of the items that are notable, we're going to have some 3D printers, CNC machine, automated embroidery machine and we're also going to be upgrading our safety equipment and some tooling for the arts like pottery and glass work," Steel said.
He says Meta Makers is a makerspace and is a place where people can meet each other with different interests and creative hobbies.
"For example if you do wood working or pottery, or glass work and you want to meet other people with similar interests and get access to all the tools and resources that you would need to do those activities, a makerspace is the perfect place to meet them."
Steel believes Windsor wants a makerspace and there's a demand for it.
"Visibility has been our biggest challenge, a lot of people don't know we exist and so right now with this grant we're trying to get the word out so that people know that, if you want to get there and start making things with other people, we got a great makerspace here in Windsor and we're happy to serve you," he said.
Meta Makers provides access to tools and resources to maximize human potential as well as enabling members to be autonomous, achieve self mastery and fulfill a sense of purpose.
The non-profit cooperative is located in Old Walkerville on Monmouth Road in the Sho Studios arts and culture hub.
