Students at four local schools will be eating healthier in the next school year.

As part of the Ontario Student Nutrition Program-Windsor Essex, $17,000 will be shared between David Maxwell Public School, William G. Davis Public School, Marlborough Public School and John Campbell Public School.

The money comes from an anonymous donation to the Windsor Essex Community Foundation and funds will be used for the vegetable and fruit delivery program, so the four schools will received the fresh produce at their door.

"Currently the vegetable and fruit delivery program is offered only on an eight week basis and we are looking to expand the program and this will allow us to do that at those four schools and pilot the program," says Program Coordinator, Danielle Findlay.

She says the donation will also help alleviate the pressure on staff at the schools.

"Volunteers will not have to go out to their local grocer to purchase the food, it will be brought to them. It will support local farmers whenever possible, reducing our carbon foot print as well and will really just give the students great fresh local produce whenever possible."

The nutrition program has set a goal to raise $100,000 by 2022 to provide the vegetable and fruit delivery program to every student on an eight week basis.
